Sales Tax
Calculate the sales tax amount, total after tax, tax-included price breakdown, or implied tax rate with a full dollar-and-percentage breakdown.
Formula / method
Add tax: Tax = Pre-tax subtotal × Tax rate ÷ 100; Total = Pre-tax subtotal + Tax. Remove tax: Pre-tax subtotal = Tax-included total ÷ (1 + rate).
How to use
Choose whether you want to add tax, remove tax from a tax-included total, or recover the implied tax rate. For add/remove modes, you can enter the rate manually or look it up by U.S. ZIP code, city, county, or address. City and county searches should include the two-letter state. The result shows tax dollars separately from the pre-tax subtotal and final amount.
What this calculator answers
This calculator separates the pre-tax subtotal, sales tax amount, tax rate, and final total. It can also reverse a tax-included total or infer the tax rate from pre-tax and final prices.
How to get a useful result
Use the sales-tax rate that applies to the actual transaction. You can type a rate directly or use the location lookup. ZIP, city, and county results are estimates because tax boundaries do not always align with postal or municipal boundaries; a full street address is more precise when available.
How to interpret it
The tax amount is the dollar amount charged as sales tax. The total after tax is the amount paid. The tax share of the final total is smaller than the tax rate because the tax rate is measured against the pre-tax price.
Before relying on the number
Sales-tax rules vary by location and item. State rates alone may not include county, city, district, restaurant, lodging, or other special taxes, and some products may be exempt. Confirm the actual applicable rate for high-value purchases.
